Allamanda

Give Allamanda a sturdy trellis, fence, wall-mounted framework, or other support from the start. Its twining, sprawling growth is most useful where it can cover a broad vertical plane, soften a hard edge, or form a flowering screen without spilling into a narrow walkway. Set the support behind the planting area and allow room at its base for tying in stems and reaching the root zone. A large container with a trellis can make the vine a movable patio screen in cold-winter gardens.^[1]

Plant individual vines 4 feet apart, measured center to center. That distance matches the mature 4-foot width, allowing neighboring plants to meet along a fence or trellis without assigning the same ground space twice. Keep the base out of path edges and leave a working strip between the support and nearby shrubs, so stems can be guided upward instead of spreading across lower planting layers.

Place it in full sun, with regular watering planned into the bed or container layout. Use a site with good drainage while maintaining even moisture; this is not a vine to tuck beneath roof overhangs or into a dry, narrow foundation strip. In-ground plantings fit best where irrigation can reach the root area without soaking the support or blocking access along the wall.^[1][2]

Yellow flowers are concentrated from summer into early fall, so reserve its strongest visual position for the warm-season garden. In Zones 10 and 11, the evergreen vine can hold its structural role through the year. In colder areas, use it as a container plant or seasonal annual, with the support and surrounding bed designed to remain useful after the vine is removed or moved indoors.
