Placement and use
Use American elm as a single major shade tree or as part of a spacious avenue where each canopy has room to hold its own shape. Set it well back from houses, overhead lines, driveways, and narrow planting strips; the mature crown can extend roughly 30 feet from the trunk in every direction. Keep lower beds and seating areas outside the trunk’s immediate working zone so future pruning, leaf cleanup, and access around the base remain straightforward.
