Angelonia

Place angelonia through the front-to-middle of a sunny border, where its narrow upright form can rise behind low edging plants without blocking the view across the bed. Repeat it in small groups to make a clear vertical rhythm along a path or at the outer edge of a patio planting. It also works well in containers, where the flower spikes give height above lower surrounding plantings. Leave a reachable edge beside dense displays so spent seasonal plants can be removed cleanly.^[1][2]

Set plants 12 inches apart, center to center. This matches the roughly 12-inch mature width, creating a close, continuous display while keeping each plant assigned to a clear square of the plan. In a long border, measure spacing from plant centers rather than from foliage edges. Keep the row set back from paths or bed edging so mature stems remain inside the planting area rather than leaning into circulation space.

Give angelonia full sun and moderate water, with soil that drains well after rain or irrigation. Use it in open beds rather than places shaded by shrubs, walls, or taller seasonal plantings for much of the day. In containers, allow room for watering at the soil surface and choose a potting mix and container that do not hold standing water around the roots.^[1][2]

Angelonia occupies its full role as a warm-season annual, carrying color from late spring into fall. Reserve its footprint in the plan for the whole growing season rather than treating it as a brief filler between spring and summer displays. Its upright flower spikes can keep a border legible as neighboring annuals widen, but clear the space when the seasonal planting is finished so the next design can be installed without crowding.
