Annual Geranium (Zonal Geranium)

Use annual geranium as a repeated anchor along a sunny bed edge, at path corners, or in groups that need a clear, mounded outline. It is especially useful where a container or window box needs upright structure rather than trailing growth. Set plants back from a narrow path far enough that the 18-inch mounds do not spill into the walking line, and leave a reachable edge for removing spent flower clusters. In mixed containers, place it toward the center or rear rather than at the rim.

Plant on 12-inch centers for a close, continuous seasonal planting. Each plant can mature about 18 inches wide, so this spacing allows the mounds to knit together rather than stand as isolated dots. For a more individually defined look, allow the full 18-inch spread around each plant. In a rectangular bed, keep the outer row at least 9 inches inside the edge so foliage has room to develop without crowding paths or lawn borders.

Give annual geranium a full-sun position with well-drained soil or a container that drains freely. Moderate moisture supports its best growth, while established plants can handle drier intervals. In containers, avoid keeping the root zone constantly wet; allow it to dry somewhat between waterings, then water thoroughly. A sunny site also helps preserve a compact, flowering habit rather than stretched, sparse growth.^[1][2]

Treat this as a warm-season annual in the planting plan. Its bloom period runs from late spring through fall, so reserve the space as an active flowering area for most of the growing season rather than planning for a short-lived spring display. When the season ends, the opening can be cleared for fall planting, bulbs, or a cool-season container changeover.
