Aubrieta

Use Aubrieta deltoidea at the face of a rock garden, along a retaining wall, or beside a sunny path where its trailing habit can be seen from above or at eye level. It also suits dry-looking wall pockets, banks, and sloped edges rather than the center of a deep border. Keep it at the front of mixed beds, allowing taller neighbors to rise behind it instead of shading the low mat. Leave the edge open so spring flowers can spill naturally without narrowing the walking line.^[1]

Set plants 1 foot apart, center to center, for a continuous groundcover planting. Each plant can spread about 1½ feet wide, so neighboring crowns will meet and overlap as the planting fills in. On a narrow ledge or wall top, place the row back from the outer edge by several inches to give the mat room to drape while keeping the crown accessible. In beds, reserve a band at least 18 inches deep for a single uninterrupted row.

Give Aubrieta a full-sun position with well-drained soil. Its low water needs make it a practical choice for exposed rockwork, gravelly edges, and other sites that should not stay wet around the crown. Avoid tucking it into irrigated pockets beside plants that need consistently moist ground; use the same dry-side zone of the planting instead.^[1][2]

Spring is its main display season, when the low foliage is covered with purple to pink flowers. Plan for that concentrated burst near entrances, seating areas, or the front edge of a bed where it can carry the scene before later perennials become dominant. Cutting plants back after flowering helps retain a compact mat, so leave enough access from a path or stepping stone to reach the planting without standing on it.^[1]
