Taxodium distichum
Bald Cypress is a large deciduous conifer that brings a tall, feathery canopy and a strongly buttressed trunk to wet-ground landscapes. At about 60 feet tall and 25 feet wide, it needs a generous long-term position rather than a tight bed or foundation strip. Its upright young form can make a useful vertical anchor beside broad lawns, pond margins, and other open areas where its mature scale has room to develop.
Use Bald Cypress as a specimen shade tree or as a major structural planting at the edge of a large property, rain garden, riparian area, or pond-side planting. Keep it clear of buildings, overhead lines, narrow paths, and small planting beds that will be overtaken by its canopy and expanding trunk base. Near water, allow an informal ground plane around the tree rather than treating the root zone as a closely maintained lawn or paved circulation area.[1]
Plant trees 25 feet apart, center to center, when repeating Bald Cypress in a grove or broad screen. That interval matches its expected 25-foot mature width, so neighboring crowns will meet or lightly overlap as they age rather than leaving a wide gap. For a single tree, reserve an open circle at least 25 feet across for the canopy, then keep additional clearance for access around the flared lower trunk and for the shade cast beyond it.
Give Bald Cypress a full-sun position and plan for consistently high moisture. It suits wet soils and can be placed where ordinary trees would struggle with prolonged wetness, including the margins of standing water. In drier settings, make irrigation access part of the layout from the start, especially while the tree is establishing and before surrounding roots occupy the planting area.[1]
Though it carries soft needles through the growing season, Bald Cypress is deciduous. The foliage turns reddish- to copper-brown in fall before dropping, so avoid locating it where seasonal needle and branchlet fall would collect in roof gutters, tight gravel joints, or narrow drainage channels. Its bare-season trunk, fibrous bark, and widening base remain visible features in the winter plan.[1]
Where the root zone stays near or in water, Bald Cypress can form knobby root projections known as knees. Leave this zone out of primary walking routes and avoid hardscape that depends on a smooth, uninterrupted surface close to the trunk. The base also broadens with age, so do not confine the tree within a small tree grate, formal paving panel, or sharply edged planting pocket.[1]
