Barren Strawberry

Use Waldsteinia ternata where a continuous low planting is more useful than distinct individual clumps. It suits the planting edge beside a path, along a rock wall, or below open-canopied shrubs, provided its spread does not narrow the walking surface. Set the first row back from hard edges so the mat can develop without spilling into circulation space. Its low stature also makes it a useful foreground layer ahead of taller shade-border plants.^[1]

Plant on 12-inch centers for a closely connected groundcover. Each plant can spread about 18 inches wide, so neighboring plants will knit together rather than remain as separate mounds; allow that overlap when calculating the bed area. Keep a clear strip at path edges and around stepping stones, especially where access is needed for pruning or weeding nearby plants. In narrow beds, use one row rather than crowding it between larger-rooted plants.

Reserve this groundcover for partial shade and moderately watered planting areas. Place it where the soil does not dry out quickly around shallow-rooted neighboring plants, and avoid relying on it as the sole cover in an exposed, fast-drying strip. A sheltered bed edge, dappled woodland margin, or shaded border offers room for its low mat while keeping taller plants from casting an overly dense canopy directly above it.

The low foliage keeps the planting footprint visually occupied beyond its flowering period, while the yellow bloom is concentrated from late spring into early summer. Plan the surrounding bed for interest before and after that window rather than expecting a long floral display from the ground layer. Its evergreen character is most dependable in mild-winter areas, so leave room for seasonal cleanup where winter wear is likely.^[1][2]
