Placement and use
Place black walnut where its eventual canopy will not overtake patios, driveways, rooflines, overhead utilities, or the main vegetable and ornamental beds. Keep the ground beneath and around it easy to reach for seasonal cleanup, and avoid making that area a high-maintenance planting display. Full sun supports the tree’s development, while a moist, fertile, well-drained site suits its strongest growth; it can also tolerate a range of loam, clay, and sandy soils.[1]
