Gelsemium sempervirens
Carolina Jessamine is an evergreen native vine that brings fragrant yellow trumpet flowers in late winter to early spring. Reaching about 20 feet tall, it is best treated as a long-term vertical element rather than a small border accent. Its narrow, twining habit can give a fence, arbor, or trellis an early-season lift while holding green presence through the rest of the year in mild climates.
Give this vine a dedicated support with enough height to make use of its climbing reach: a fence panel, arbor, trellis, porch column, or screen all suit its habit. Set the support where the vine can climb without crossing a gate, narrowing a path, or reaching into nearby shrubs. Place lower perennials in front only after leaving a clear planting pocket at the base for watering, training, and seasonal pruning.
Space plants 5 feet apart, center to center, when repeating Carolina Jessamine along a fence or screen. Although the vine’s mature spread is about 3 feet, allow the wider interval so each plant has its own section of support and can be reached for tying in or cutting back. On an arbor, use one plant per side unless the structure is especially broad and strong.
Reserve a full-sun position to support the strongest floral display. Moderate water needs make this a useful fit beside regularly tended beds or along a structure within reach of a hose; avoid making its base inaccessible behind dense planting. Use a well-drained, organically rich planting area, and keep moisture reasonably even while the vine establishes.[1][2]
Its flowering season arrives from late winter into early spring, so place it where the yellow bloom can be seen from windows, entries, or commonly used paths during that quieter part of the garden year. Keep the support available for pruning soon after flowering, when shaping and retraining can be done without sacrificing the next display. Evergreen foliage continues to occupy the structure after bloom.[1]
Keep Carolina Jessamine out of the planted area closest to the house where a low-flammability planting scheme is needed. Its long-lived, evergreen cover can become a substantial layer on a support, so locate it where this permanent vertical mass is desirable and manageable rather than beside a building’s defensible-space planting.[1]
