Catnip is a vigorous perennial herb that brings a loose, spreading presence to sunny planting areas. Reaching about 3 feet tall and wide, it has enough scale for the middle of an herb bed or a broad border rather than a narrow edge. Its late-spring-to-early-fall bloom and harvest window makes it a long-running feature where flowering herbs can occupy space through much of the growing season.

The mature spread is about 3 ft (90 cm), so plants set at that distance grow together into a closed canopy over the bed.
Treat 2 ft as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Use catnip in a sunny border, herb garden, or dedicated container where its broad habit has room to develop without closing off a path. Set it behind short edging plants or at the outer side of a vegetable bed, keeping a clear reach-in edge for harvesting and cutting back.

Flowering and harvest extend from late spring into early fall, so leave room for catnip to remain in place while nearby seasonal crops are changed out. Trim after the first flowering flush to keep the clump more compact and encourage continued bloom. Plan this task from a nearby path or bed edge rather than relying on access through adjacent plantings.[1][2]
Contain catnip from the outset: it can become weedy and is well suited to a container when its spread would be inconvenient in a mixed bed. If planting in the ground, give it a clearly defined zone and review its footprint after each season before allowing it to occupy more border space.[1]
