Celosia

Place celosia in full sun where its upright outline can read clearly from a path, patio, or main viewing angle. It works well through the middle of a sunny bed, behind lower annuals, or in a repeated row that gives a border a stronger vertical rhythm. Keep it out of spaces intended for sprawling plants: its narrow footprint is more useful as an accent threaded among broader flowering clumps. Arrange several plants in short drifts rather than scattering isolated specimens across a large bed.

Allow about 1 foot of bed width for each mature plant, and set plants 1 foot apart, center to center. This creates a close, continuous planting while keeping the layout easy to measure and repeat. In a mixed border, reserve that same 1-foot interval from the centers of neighboring plants rather than relying on open-looking gaps at planting time. Place the row far enough inside the bed that flowers and stems do not lean into the path as the planting fills out.

Give celosia a full-sun position with well-drained soil. Moderate watering suits a bed where moisture is checked regularly, especially while plants are settling in and carrying flowers. Avoid locating it in a persistently wet pocket or at the bottom of a slope that collects runoff; choose a raised or freely draining part of the bed instead. A sunny, open planting area also keeps its floral display visually prominent through the season.^[1][2]

This is an annual, so its footprint is seasonal rather than permanent. Build it into warm-season beds that need height and strong flower presence from early summer through fall, then plan to clear and rework the space after the display ends. Because the plant is heat-loving, it is especially useful for holding the visual structure of a sunny annual border as summer advances.
