China Aster

Set China aster where its late-season flowers can rise behind low edging plants without blocking a path or the view into the bed. A grouped planting gives the display more visual weight than scattered single plants and keeps stems convenient for cutting. It also fits containers, border fronts or middles, and cutting-garden blocks. Keep an accessible bed edge or narrow path alongside the planting so regular watering, harvest, and cleanup do not require stepping between plants.^[1][2]

Space plants 1 foot apart, center to center. Each plant reaches about 1 foot wide, so this creates a close-knit planting with mature plants meeting at their edges rather than leaving broad open gaps. Use that rhythm for a solid row or block, but reserve open space at the outside edge for hand access and air movement. Avoid squeezing the group between taller, spreading neighbors that would crowd its flowering stems.

Give China aster full sun and regular water in fertile soil. Place it in an open part of the bed with good air circulation instead of against a dense hedge, solid fence, or tightly packed wall of foliage. A site that drains well while remaining evenly moist suits the planting better than a spot that stays wet and enclosed after rain.^[1][2]

This annual occupies its space for one growing season, with its main bloom window arriving in late summer and fall. Use it to extend a border or cutting garden after earlier-flowering plants have finished. Plan the bed as a seasonal composition rather than a permanent framework: its footprint can be reassigned or replanted when the growing season ends.
