Placement and use
Give Clematis a sturdy trellis, mesh panel, fence, or other support with enough height to carry and spread its stems. Set it where the top growth receives full sun, while the base can be shaded by low planting or mulch. Along a wall or fence, keep the planting position about 1 to 1½ feet out from the structure, then guide young shoots onto the support. Leave the support face accessible for training, pruning, and untangling stems.[1][2]
