Coleus

Use coleus in groups to make a continuous block of foliage color beneath open-canopy trees, along shaded foundations, or behind lower annuals at a bed edge. Set the first row far enough back from paths that its eventual spread does not crowd circulation. Its compact scale also suits pots, where one plant can serve as the main leafy mass and leave room around the rim for a clean, accessible watering zone.^[1][2]

Plant coleus 18 inches apart, center to center, for a closely knit planting that fills in as stems branch. Individual plants may reach about 2 feet across, so neighboring foliage can overlap slightly at maturity; allow that spread within the bed rather than placing the row directly against a walk, wall, or taller foreground planting. In a narrow border, use a single staggered row to preserve reach for pinching and cleanup.

Give coleus partial shade and regular water, keeping the root zone lightly moist rather than allowing repeated drying. A soil that drains well while holding organic matter provides a steadier setting for summer growth.
