Jasminum officinale
Common jasmine is a perennial vine for turning a vertical support into a fragrant summer feature. Its white, starry flowers appear from summer into early fall, while the plant climbs to about 15 feet tall and 5 feet wide. Give it a permanent place rather than treating it as a small border filler: its twining growth needs structure, and its long stems benefit from pruning after bloom.
Set common jasmine at the base of a sturdy trellis, pergola post, fence panel, or other support that can carry a vigorous climber. A warm, sheltered, sunny position helps make the most of its flowering display, while a support close to a sitting area, entry, or path lets the fragrance register without forcing stems into circulation space. Keep the planting position on the bed side of a path and guide new growth onto the support as it lengthens.[1][2][3]
Space plants 5 feet apart, center to center, allowing each vine its own support bay and roughly 5 feet of lateral room at maturity. Plan for the 15-foot height as a vertical layer above lower planting, not as width within the bed. Leave an open strip at the base or a nearby path edge so stems can be tied in, redirected, and pruned without reaching through neighboring plants.
Use a full-sun planting position with soil that drains well while retaining steady moisture through the growing season. Regular garden soil is suitable when it is not waterlogged, and organic matter can help maintain an even root zone. Avoid a cold, frost-prone pocket or a site where a roof overhang leaves the base dry and inaccessible to watering.[1][2][3]
The flowering season runs from summer into early fall, so keep the support visually useful even when the vine is not in bloom. Prune after flowering rather than cutting it back while it is preparing its display. This timing also makes it easier to reset wandering stems within their allotted support bay before the next growing season.[1][2][3]
Common jasmine is suited to USDA Zones 7 through 10. In colder settings, place it where winter exposure is moderated and where a container or protected growing arrangement can be accommodated if needed. Do not rely on a light ornamental obelisk or a narrow gate for long-term support; established plants are vigorous and need a substantial framework.[1][2][3]
