Cryptomeria (Japanese Cedar)

Use Japanese cedar along a broad property edge, behind a deep border, or in an open lawn where its height will not crowd roofs, overhead lines, or neighboring gardens. A row can form a substantial privacy screen, but allow room on both sides for future access and for nearby plants to receive light. Keep it well back from paths, patios, and driveways so expanding lower branches do not constrict circulation.

Set plants 20 feet apart, center to center, for a screen or repeated planting. That interval is tighter than the eventual 25-foot spread, so neighboring crowns can create a continuous visual mass as they mature. Reserve a planting band at least as generous as the mature width, and avoid placing smaller permanent shrubs directly within the tree’s future branch zone.

Place this conifer in full sun and provide regular water, particularly while it is establishing and during dry periods. A moist, well-drained planting area suits its long-term growth; avoid locations where the root zone repeatedly dries out. If the site is exposed in winter, give the tree a sheltered position away from persistent drying winds.^[1][2]

The evergreen canopy holds its screening role through winter, so plan its shade and visual mass as a year-round condition rather than a summer-only feature. Soft green foliage may take on bronze tones in harsh cold, adding seasonal color without opening the screen.
