Deodar Cedar

Use this tree as a single specimen where its layered, drooping outline can be seen from several directions. Set it well back from buildings, driveways, streets, and regular walking routes so low branches can develop without becoming a pruning obstacle. Avoid tucking it into a mixed border: the mature canopy will dominate nearby planting space and create a substantial permanent landmark in the plan.^[1][2]

Allow a mature canopy footprint roughly 30 feet across, and place multiple Deodar Cedars 25 feet apart, center to center. That spacing suits an open grove or screen-like composition, but canopies may eventually read as a connected mass. For a specimen with clear silhouette and easier access around its lower limbs, reserve additional open space beyond the canopy edge.

Give it full sun and plan for low-water conditions once it is established. Choose a site with well-drained soil rather than a low spot that stays wet, and keep the root zone clear of drainage outfalls or routinely saturated bed areas. This is a permanent tree placement, so resolve drainage before planting instead of trying to correct it after the canopy has filled in.^[1][2]

The evergreen canopy holds its presence through winter, so it continues to screen views and cast shade when deciduous neighbors are bare. Leave room for this year-round occupancy in the garden plan; a sunny bed beside a young tree may become a more shaded edge as its canopy expands. Its blue-green foliage and cascading branch tips are most effective when backed by open sky, lawn, or a simple surface.
