Dusty Miller brings silvery, lacy foliage to sunny planting plans, where its light color can sharpen the outline of an edge or break up larger blocks of green. At roughly 1 foot tall and wide, it stays low enough for the front of a bed without reading as a groundcover. Use it as a heat-tolerant foliage filler in annual displays, borders, and containers.

Set Dusty Miller along the front or outer curve of a sunny bed, where its pale foliage remains visible from a path and can define the planting edge. It also suits the exposed rim of a container, with taller plants placed behind or nearer the center so the foliage is not hidden. Repeat it in small groups to carry the same silver note through a mixed planting rather than scattering single plants across the bed.
Allow a 1-foot-wide footprint for each plant and space plants 1 foot apart, center to center. That close, even rhythm makes a continuous edging or low filler band while leaving each rounded clump its own place. In a bed beside a path, keep the planting line set back enough that the mature foliage does not spill into the walking surface or crowd nearby low plants.
Use Dusty Miller in full sun and in soil that drains freely. Give new plantings water while they settle in, then avoid treating the foliage band like a regularly wet, thirsty border. A sunny, well-drained position helps preserve the clean silver effect that makes the plant useful as contrast in beds and containers.[1][2]
Although often used to fill a single season, Dusty Miller is perennial in USDA Zones 7 through 11. In colder places, plan it as a seasonal layer that can be replaced when the display changes. Flower buds can be removed when they appear to keep attention on the foliage, and the silvery leaves may remain attractive late into fall.[1][2]
Reserve the best-drained spot in the border rather than a low pocket that stays wet after irrigation or rain. If a plant develops rust, its foliage contrast can become less effective in a formal edge or repeated mass, so keep replacement plants or a nearby alternate filler in mind when designing a long, continuous run.[1][2]
