Aristolochia macrophylla
Dutchman’s Pipe is a perennial vine for making a substantial leafy screen on a tall vertical structure. Reaching about 25 feet high and 10 feet wide, it needs a permanent framework rather than a small obelisk or narrow wall panel. Its dense foliage gives porches, fences, and garden boundaries a more enclosed summer character, while the late-spring to early-summer flowers are a secondary detail within the leaf cover.
Give this vine a sturdy trellis, arbor, fence, or other support with enough height for a 25-foot climb and enough depth to carry a broad curtain of foliage. Place it where the resulting screen can shade only the areas intended; avoid training it across a narrow gate, low planting bed, or route that must remain open for regular passage. Set the support back from paths so stems can be guided and pruned without forcing gardeners into surrounding plantings.[1][2]

That interval allows individual plants to establish while acknowledging that each can eventually occupy about 10 feet of horizontal space. On a single arbor or trellis bay, reserve the full width for one plant rather than filling the base with competing climbers. Keep the root area clear enough to reach the support and manage stems.
Use a partial-sun position with soil that stays evenly moist but drains well. A richer planting strip beside the support suits its vigorous leafy growth, especially where roof overhangs or paved edges might otherwise leave the soil dry. Build the support where it has some protection from strong wind, and leave room to water the root zone without soaking nearby paths or foundations.[1][2]
This is a deciduous screen, so plan for the support and the view beyond it to be visible after leaf drop. In the growing season, the overlapping leaves can make the structure feel much more solid and shaded. Late spring into early summer is the flowering period, but the flowers can sit behind the foliage; place the vine for the screen first, not for close-up floral display.[1][2]
Allow a clear approach for annual guidance and size control on the support. Late-winter pruning can be used to manage growth, so avoid pinning the vine behind dense shrubs or installing it where ladders and tools cannot safely reach the framework. A support that can be inspected and repaired before the growing season will be easier to keep orderly.[1][2]
