Euonymus japonicus
Evergreen euonymus is a compact broadleaf evergreen shrub that brings glossy foliage and a strong year-round outline to the plan. At about 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide, it has enough height to anchor a foundation bed or create a tailored green boundary without reading as a small edging plant. Its perennial structure is most useful where winter presence matters as much as summer fullness.

The mature spread is about 4 ft (1.2 m), leaving roughly 12 inches (30 cm) of open ground between plants once they are full grown.
Treat 5 ft as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Use Evergreen Euonymus as a hedge, a repeated backbone along a boundary, or a clipped accent near an entry or foundation. Place it behind lower perennials and ground-level planting so its upright mass remains visible rather than swallowing the bed. Along a house wall, keep the planting line far enough forward for the mature canopy and for pruning access; avoid using its eventual width to fill a narrow strip between a wall and a path.
Allow a mature footprint about 4 feet across and 8 feet high. Space plants 5 feet apart, center to center, for a row that reads as distinct shrubs with a little breathing room at maturity rather than a tightly compressed screen. In a hedge layout, run the centers in a straight, measurable line and keep nearby paths, doors, and windows outside the plants’ mature spread.
Reserve a full-sun position and provide moderate water, especially while plants are becoming established. Use ground that drains well rather than a spot that remains wet after rain or irrigation. This makes Evergreen Euonymus a better fit for raised foundation beds, open borders, and other planting areas where water does not collect around the root zone.[1]
The evergreen foliage keeps this shrub present through winter, so its spacing remains visually important even when surrounding herbaceous plants are dormant. Small greenish flowers may appear in early summer, but the main design role is its lasting leafy mass. Keep the row accessible for any shaping needed to preserve clear edges beside paths, walls, and neighboring plants.[2]
Do not crowd this shrub into permanently wet ground or an inaccessible gap behind other large plants. Euonymus scale, powdery mildew, and several other pest or disease problems can occur, so leave enough working room to inspect stems and foliage from more than one side. A continuous hedge is easier to monitor when it is not pressed directly against a fence or wall.[1][2]
