False Cypress

Set it toward the back or outer edge of a large bed, away from low windows, tight corners, and overhead obstructions. Its evergreen mass can define a property edge, screen a broad view, or create a strong vertical stop at the end of a long border. Keep the planting far enough from paths and patios that mature branches do not compress circulation or make routine access difficult. A wide lawn-side or shrub-border position leaves room for its form to develop.

Space plants 12 feet apart, center to center, when arranging a repeated row or group. Each plant can ultimately occupy roughly a 15-foot-wide canopy, so allow extra clearance from walls, fences, and neighboring woody plants where branches need to retain their natural spread. For a screen, plan the row as a broad evergreen band rather than a narrow hedge; leave a reachable maintenance strip on at least one side.

Place false cypress in full sun and provide moderate moisture, especially while it is establishing. Choose a site with moist but well-drained soil rather than a spot that stays wet after rain. Good drainage is particularly important near downspouts, low points, or heavy irrigation zones, where prolonged wet soil can make a large evergreen harder to maintain.^[1][2]

Evergreen foliage keeps this plant visually present through every season, so its mature footprint remains part of the winter garden as well as the summer border. Give it room beside dormant perennials and deciduous shrubs without relying on their seasonal dieback for clearance. The foliage also makes it useful where a bed needs a stable backdrop when other plantings are out of leaf.^[1][2]
