Fan Flower is a low, heat-loving annual that makes its strongest visual impact at an edge, where its trailing stems and fan-shaped flowers can spill into open space. Growing about 9 inches tall and 18 inches wide, it works as a flowering ground-level layer rather than a vertical focal point. Use its blue, white, or pink bloom colors to carry a border or container planting from late spring into fall.
Place Fan Flower at the front of a hot border, along the outside edge of a raised bed, or where a container can show off its trailing habit. It suits hanging baskets and window boxes particularly well; position these where the stems can drape without obstructing a door, seating area, or path. In beds, reserve an open edge rather than tucking it behind upright plants that would hide its low flowering layer.
Set plants 12 inches apart, center to center, for a connected planting that fills in quickly. Each plant can spread about 18 inches wide, so allow its foliage and flowering stems to overlap gently at the bed edge or container rim. Keep the planting line at least several inches back from narrow paths, since the trailing growth can soften the boundary and lean into circulation space.
Give Fan Flower a full-sun position and moderate water through the growing season. Use a bed or container with good drainage so the planting can be watered regularly without leaving the roots in persistently wet soil. In a mixed container, place it near the rim and pair it only with plants that can share those sunny, evenly watered conditions.[1][2]
Fan Flower occupies its space as a warm-season annual, flowering from late spring through fall. Leave enough room around it for the trailing layer to develop during summer rather than filling every gap with short-lived early-season plants. Its long bloom window makes it useful for maintaining color at container rims and border fronts after spring displays have faded.
Treat Fan Flower as a seasonal planting in the layout, with its bed or container space available for replanting after the growing season. Its low height means taller neighboring annuals can quickly shade or visually bury it, especially when planted in the interior of a border. Keep it toward the sun-facing edge of taller groups and give its trailing stems a clear direction to grow.
