Fern Pine

Place it along a spacious property boundary, at the outer edge of a large lawn, or in a broad planting strip where its height will not crowd roofs, overhead lines, or smaller trees. A row can form an evergreen visual screen, while a single tree works as a strong vertical anchor at the back of a deep bed. Keep the planting line far enough from paths and patios that the mature canopy does not turn circulation space into root-zone planting space. It can also be maintained by pruning or shearing for a more managed screen.^[1]

Set multiple Fern Pines 20 feet apart, center to center, for a continuous but not cramped long-term row. Each tree can reach roughly 25 feet across, so allow the planting to read as a broad living wall rather than a narrow hedge. Reserve at least the full mature-width zone between trunks and nearby permanent features, and keep an accessible edge on one side for pruning, cleanup, and inspection.

Use Fern Pine in full-sun areas, especially where an evergreen canopy is wanted without placing a shorter shrub in the shade of larger trees. Its low water needs make it best suited to a plan that does not depend on frequent irrigation. Keep the root area open rather than filling it tightly with thirsty, high-maintenance planting.

This perennial evergreen holds its screening and shading role through the year in USDA Zones 9 through 11. Plan for its canopy as a permanent source of cover, not as a seasonal backdrop that opens in winter. Position sun-dependent beds and outdoor sitting areas with the mature shade pattern in mind.
