Kalanchoe blossfeldiana
Flaming Katy is a compact perennial succulent that reaches about 1 foot tall and 1 foot wide. Its clustered bright flowers bring concentrated color above a small, tidy footprint from late winter into early spring. Use it where a low, contained flowering accent is more useful than height: near a bright entry, on a patio table, or at the front edge of a warm-climate planting.
Place Flaming Katy in a container, raised planter, rock-garden pocket, or other sharply drained setting where its small form will not be crowded by broader neighbors. It works especially well near seating, doorways, and paths, where the flowers can be seen at close range without narrowing circulation. In colder regions, keep pots positioned so they can be moved indoors before cold weather; in Zones 10 through 12, it can remain part of the outdoor layout.[1]
Allow a 1-foot by 1-foot mature footprint for each plant, and set plants 1 foot apart, center to center. That spacing creates a nearly continuous low planting as plants fill out, so reserve a slightly wider margin beside paths or pot rims for foliage and flower clusters. In mixed beds, keep taller or faster-spreading plants behind it rather than pressing into its small square of space.
Give it partial sun or bright filtered light, with protection from prolonged hot direct sun. Use a well-drained succulent or cactus-style potting mix in containers, and avoid positions that stay wet after watering or rain. Water deeply only after the growing medium has dried between waterings, making it a better fit beside other low-water container plants than beside regularly irrigated annual displays.[1]
Late-winter to early-spring flowering makes Flaming Katy useful for refreshing an entry or sheltered patio when many outdoor beds are still quiet. Keep its bloom-season position open rather than hiding it behind winter-interest foliage. After flowering, the compact green mound can remain in place as a low textural element, especially in a container arrangement that does not depend on constant bloom.
Flaming Katy is perennial outdoors only in USDA Zones 10 through 12. Elsewhere, treat it as a movable container plant rather than a permanent bed occupant, and plan a bright indoor holding spot before temperatures fall below 45°F. Good air circulation and fast drainage matter most in tightly grouped pots or sheltered corners, where lingering moisture can cause problems.[1]
