French Marigold

Use French marigold along bed fronts, at path-side corners, or in short repeated runs that visually finish a planting area. Keep the plants inside the bed edge rather than letting their mature width spill into a narrow walking route; a planted strip about 1 foot deep gives each plant room while preserving circulation. In containers, place it near the outer rim or as a low middle layer beneath taller plants, leaving enough open surface for watering.

Set plants 9 inches apart, center to center, for a closely filled edging or a compact block of color. Each plant can reach about 1 foot wide, so this spacing allows neighboring crowns to knit together as they mature rather than remaining as separate dots. For a looser outline beside vegetables or along a path, retain a clear strip beyond the planting line so foliage and spent flowers remain easy to reach.

Reserve an open, full-sun position with well-drained soil. Water regularly during dry periods, especially where plants are confined by container walls or compete with larger nearby roots, while avoiding a persistently wet planting pocket. A bed that drains freely also makes it easier to maintain a tidy low edge through the flowering season.^[1][2]

This annual occupies its space for one growing season, with blooms from early summer through fall. Build it into seasonal gaps at the front of beds or around warm-season vegetables, then plan for the planting to be cleared and replanted after frost ends its display.
