Fuchsia spp.
Fuchsia brings pendulous two-tone flowers to sheltered, partially shaded planting areas from late spring into fall. At about 2 feet tall and wide, it makes a small flowering presence rather than a background screen. Use its arching bloom display where it can be seen at close range: beside a shaded entry, along a patio edge, or at the front of a protected mixed border. Its flowers also add pollinator activity to these quieter garden spaces.

The mature spread is about 2 ft (60 cm), so plants set at that distance grow together into a closed canopy over the bed.
Treat 18 inches as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Place fuchsia where taller shrubs, a fence, or an overhang softens direct afternoon sun without blocking access for watering. Its compact scale works well in containers, window boxes, and hanging baskets, where the pendulous flowers can hang below the rim and remain visible from a path or seating area. In ground-level beds, position it near the front or along an inside curve rather than behind broad plants that would hide the flowering stems.
Space plants 18 inches apart, center to center, for a closely planted seasonal display. Each plant can reach about 2 feet wide, so neighboring plants may meet and lightly overlap as the bed fills in. Keep the outer row set back from paths and paving so foliage and flowers do not spill into circulation space. Leave a reachable edge for regular watering and removal of fallen blooms or leaves.
Use a part-shade position with soil that stays evenly moist but does not remain waterlogged. A moisture-retentive, organic-rich planting mix helps maintain the regular water supply this plant needs, especially in containers and baskets where the root zone dries quickly. Avoid exposed locations that combine hot sun with drying soil; flowering and foliage can lose vigor during summer heat.[1]
Treat fuchsia as a full-season flowering component rather than a brief spring accent. Plan for blooms from late spring into fall, then allow room to change out or clear the planting at season’s end. In hanging baskets and containers, its long display is most useful near doors, patios, and other places visited often through the warm months.
The 2-foot mature width is a useful allowance for upright, bushy selections, but fuchsia habit varies among cultivars. Choose a trailing form when planting a hanging basket or elevated container, and reserve upright forms for beds, borders, and standard containers. Keep it out of narrow, hot reflected-heat spaces where regular moisture would be difficult to maintain.[1]
