Garlic chives are a compact, clumping perennial herb with flat leaves and white flowers that arrive from late summer into early fall. At about 18 inches tall, the foliage makes a low, usable layer around the edge of a vegetable bed or within a dedicated herb border. The plant remains in place from year to year, so give it a defined spot rather than treating it as a gap-filler among frequently replanted crops.
