Kroenleinia grusonii
Golden Barrel Cactus is a slow-growing, spherical perennial with a strong sculptural presence from its golden spines. At about 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide, it reads best as an individual focal point or as part of a deliberately open cactus planting. Use it outdoors year-round in USDA Zones 9–11, where its compact form can hold a sunny bed together without crowding nearby plants.
Give this cactus a sunny, dry-facing position in a gravel garden, rock garden, raised bed, or large container. Set it back from paths, steps, gates, and play areas so its spines do not intrude into circulation or routine maintenance space. Its rounded form makes a useful visual pause at a bed corner or beside a wall, but leave open ground around it rather than tucking it beneath taller, denser planting.[1][2]
Space Golden Barrel Cactus 3 feet apart, center to center. That matches its roughly 3-foot mature width, so neighboring plants will meet visually without forcing this broad, spiny form into a congested clump. In a mixed bed, keep the planting line far enough inside the edge that the mature barrel does not narrow the path. A single specimen also benefits from a clear circle of gravel or bare mulch around its base.
Plant in full sun and keep irrigation restrained. Fast drainage is essential: use a coarse, gritty soil or cactus mix rather than a site that holds water after rain. A dry, airy setting suits its low-water character and keeps the planting visually clean, especially where gravel mulch can separate the cactus from moisture-retentive organic mulches.[1][2]
Summer is the main flowering season. Mature plants may carry yellow flowers from the crown at the top of the barrel, so avoid surrounding it with plants that spill across or conceal its upper surface. The evergreen-looking, ribbed form remains useful outside the bloom period, making it suitable for a bed that needs year-round structure rather than a short seasonal display.[2]
Sharp spines are a lasting design constraint, not a detail to hide behind softer planting. Reserve enough reach space for weeding and occasional container handling without leaning across the plant. In containers, the cactus stays smaller than it may in the ground, but the pot still needs a stable location where passersby will not brush against it.[1]
