Golden Rain Tree

Koelreuteria paniculata

Golden Rain Tree is a broad, medium-scale ornamental tree with yellow flower panicles in early to midsummer and papery lantern-like seed pods afterward. Reaching about 35 feet tall and wide, it needs the visual and physical room of a small canopy tree rather than a narrow border accent. Its summer flowers can also contribute nectar for pollinating insects.

Placement and use

Give this tree an open lawn panel, large island bed, or outer edge of a patio planting where its rounded, spreading crown can develop without pressing into buildings or neighboring canopies. Keep it far enough from seating, paving, and other hardscape that fallen flowers and leaves will not become a recurring cleanup issue. Its heat, drought, and urban tolerance suit exposed residential sites with room for a shade tree.[1][2]

Spacing and mature footprint

Set Golden Rain Trees 30 feet apart, center to center. That interval allows individual trees to read as separate specimens while their mature crowns, which can reach roughly 35 feet across, are allowed to approach and overlap lightly over time. Reserve a broad canopy zone above nearby beds, and place lower planting where it can remain accessible from a path instead of being enclosed beneath the expanding branches.

Three plants set 30 ft apart, center to center; shaded circles show the 35 ft mature spread.

Sun, water, and soil

Use a full-sun position to support flowering and keep the crown from competing with taller shade trees. Once established, this low-water tree fits dry planting areas and sites that do not receive regular irrigation. Well-drained ground is the clearest fit, though it can handle a range of soil textures and pH conditions.[1][2]

Seasonal notes

The main display arrives from early to midsummer, when yellow flower clusters stand above the foliage. Papery seed capsules extend the ornamental season into fall and may persist later, while foliage can turn yellow in autumn. Leave enough open sky around the crown for the summer flowers to register as a focal point from paths, windows, or outdoor sitting areas.[1][2]

Planning caveats

Avoid tight courtyards, narrow side yards, and storm-exposed positions where brittle branches would overhang a path, parked vehicle, or roof edge. This tree can reseed and become weedy, so allow for monitoring and removal of unwanted seedlings around beds and property margins. In some regions it can escape cultivation; consider its local behavior before giving it a place beside natural areas.[2]
