Golden Star

Use Golden Star along woodland-style paths, beneath open-canopied shrubs, or across the front of a shaded border where regular moisture is practical. Its spreading, rhizomatous habit forms a manageable mat, so it can connect planting pockets and soften hard bed edges. Keep the planting set back enough from stepping surfaces to preserve a clear walking line as the foliage fills outward, especially beside narrow paths.^[1][2]

Plant on 12-inch centers for a continuous groundcover effect. Each plant can mature to about 18 inches wide, so the foliage will overlap rather than remain as separate clumps; allow that extra spread inside the bed, not into a path or beside tightly placed edging. In a small bed, use the spacing to calculate the initial grid, then reserve an 18-inch-wide band for the mature planting footprint.

Place it where partial shade and regular moisture can be maintained, particularly in the root zone beneath shrubs and trees. A position with dappled light and moist, well-drained soil supports the most dependable cover. Full sun is best avoided unless the soil can remain consistently moist, which may be difficult at exposed bed edges or next to heat-reflecting paving.^[1][2]

The main flower display falls in spring and early summer, when the low foliage layer is punctuated by yellow blooms held above it. In hot-summer areas, flowering can thin or pause in summer, with a lighter return possible in fall. Plan the surrounding bed so its foliage still has a clear role after the spring display, rather than relying on it as a season-long floral accent.^[1][2]
