Gomphrena

Use gomphrena in full-sun borders where a low, rounded drift can soften the edge of taller annuals or perennials behind it. Its upright flower stems and papery heads make it useful near a cutting area; place the group within easy reach of a path so stems can be gathered without stepping into the bed. It also works in small spaces, containers, and hot border sections where a dense, bushy annual is wanted.^[1][2]

Set plants 12 inches apart, center to center, for a continuous but readable planting ribbon. Each plant reaches about 1 foot wide, so this spacing allows neighboring clumps to meet as they fill out rather than leaving a broad gap. In a border, repeat it in groups along the path-facing edge, and keep the planting line far enough back to preserve clear circulation for cutting and deadheading.

Reserve an open position with full sun for the most dependable form and flowering. Gomphrena has low water needs, making it a practical choice for a bed that is not kept constantly moist. Give it soil that drains well, especially where irrigation overlaps from nearby plantings, and avoid placing it in the wettest pocket of a mixed border.^[1]

This annual occupies its space for one growing season, with blooms extending from summer into fall. Treat its footprint as a seasonal layer in the plan: install it after frost risk has passed, then leave access around the drift for cutting or removal at season’s end. The flowers hold their color well for dried arrangements, so a few plants near the harvest side of the bed can earn extra room.^[1][2]
