Magnolia 'Jane'
Jane Magnolia is a deciduous, shrub-form magnolia that reaches about 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide. Its fragrant purple-pink, tulip-shaped flowers arrive in mid spring, creating a strong seasonal focal point without taking on the scale of a large shade tree. The later bloom timing helps the display avoid frost damage, making it especially useful where early-spring flowering trees can be unreliable.

Give Jane Magnolia a visible position where its spring flowers can be enjoyed from a window, entry walk, patio, or frequently used path. At its mature height, it works well as a small specimen near the back or middle of a broad planting bed, with lower plants kept clear of its base and main viewing side. Avoid squeezing it between structures or into a narrow side yard; leave enough open ground for its rounded presence to read clearly.
Allow for a mature canopy about 10 feet across, then space multiple plants 12 feet apart, center to center. That interval gives each plant room to develop a distinct outline while keeping a repeated planting visually connected. In a bed, reserve a broad circle rather than a tight rectangular slot, and keep paths, walls, and neighboring woody plants far enough away to preserve access around the canopy edge.
Place this magnolia in full sun and plan for regular watering, particularly where surrounding paving, roof overhangs, or large established plants compete for moisture. Position irrigation so the root zone can be watered without repeatedly soaking paths or hardscape. A mulched planting area is easier to maintain than turf pushed tightly against the trunk area.
The mid-spring bloom is the main planning event, so place Jane Magnolia where bare-season branches and emerging flowers will not be hidden behind evergreen screens or taller shrubs. As a deciduous plant, it also leaves more light and openness in the bed after leaf drop. Use that changing seasonal footprint when placing nearby plants and seating areas.
Jane Magnolia is perennial and suited to USDA hardiness zones 4 through 8. Its flowering display is a brief spring feature rather than a year-round screen, so do not rely on it alone for privacy or enclosure. Keep circulation routes outside the canopy’s expected spread so pruning, watering, and viewing the flowers remain straightforward as the plant matures.
