Placement and use
Place Japanese painted fern toward the front or middle of a full-shade bed, with taller shrubs or broad-leaved shade plants behind it. Its compact clump suits the quieter edges of woodland-style borders, shaded foundations, and sheltered container groupings. Keep the planting close enough to paths or patios to appreciate the frond color, but avoid narrow pinch points where the arching foliage would brush through foot traffic. A protected site also helps preserve an orderly outline.[1][2]
