Nigella damascena
Love-in-a-Mist is a fine-textured annual that brings delicate blue flowers, ferny foliage, and ornamental seed pods to the garden from late spring into early summer. At about 18 inches tall and 12 inches wide, it makes a light, airy layer rather than a dense visual block. Its self-sowing habit can carry the display into future seasons, so give it a place where volunteer seedlings can be welcome.

The mature spread is about 12 inches (30 cm), so plants set at that distance grow together into a closed canopy over the bed.
Treat 9 inches as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Use Nigella damascena in small drifts through a sunny border, along the middle of a mixed bed, or near a walkway where its finely divided foliage can soften harder edges. Keep it behind very low edging plants but in front of taller summer growers that will take over as its early-season display fades. It also suits containers, provided the planting is not crowded and spent plants can be removed without disturbing neighboring roots.[1][2]
Set plants 9 inches apart, center to center, to form a close but readable planting. Each plant reaches roughly 12 inches wide, so foliage will lightly knit together as the clump fills out. In a bed, repeat that spacing in offset rows for an informal drift; beside paths, hold the first row back several inches so feathery growth and developing pods do not spill into circulation space.
Reserve an open, full-sun position with well-drained soil. Moderate, even moisture helps the planting stay presentable while it is growing, especially where a wall, paving, or larger neighboring plants create a dry pocket. Direct sowing in the intended bed avoids the disruption that can come with moving young plants, making it useful for filling planned gaps between established perennials.[1][2]
The main floral show falls in late spring and early summer, followed by decorative seed pods. Leave room for later-growing plants to occupy the same area after Love-in-a-Mist declines in summer, rather than relying on it for full-season cover. Removing spent flowers prolongs bloom but also removes the pods, so decide whether a longer flower display or the pod display matters more in that part of the plan.[1][2]
Because it self-sows easily, avoid placing it in tightly controlled formal patterns or among slow-to-emerge plants whose seedlings could be difficult to distinguish. Leave a modest open margin around the drift for thinning or relocating volunteer seedlings in spring. If you want the planting to remain within its original footprint, remove seed heads before they disperse.
