Mandevilla spp.
Mandevilla is a tropical twining vine grown for large trumpet flowers in pink, red, or white from late spring into fall. Reaching about 10 feet tall and 3 feet wide, it brings vertical color to a sunny trellis, arbor, fence panel, or substantial container support. Its flowering season makes it most useful where a tall summer screen or upright focal point will not block essential views or circulation.

The mature spread is about 3 ft (90 cm), so neighboring plants just meet at maturity without crowding.
Treat 3 ft as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Place mandevilla at the base of a support that can carry a full season of climbing stems, rather than relying on a short nursery stake. A trellis, pergola post, arbor side, or wires fixed to a wall gives the vine a defined plane to occupy. Keep the support just outside the main path line so stems and flowers do not lean into walking space. In a movable container, use a tall tripod or trellis with enough room to train stems into an open framework.[1][2]
Set plants 3 feet apart, center to center, and reserve roughly 3 feet of width for each plant at the base. That spacing suits a repeated run along a fence or a series of individual supports without crowding the root and stem zone. Leave a reachable strip between the planting and adjacent shrubs, walls, or furniture so new stems can be tied in and the support remains accessible.
Use a full-sun position for strong flowering, with soil that drains well and regular watering through active growth. In beds, avoid low pockets that stay wet after rain. For containers, place the pot where watering is convenient and where the root zone will not dry out unnoticed beside hot paving or a wall.[1]
This vine remains perennial in USDA Zones 9 through 11. Where freezing weather is expected, plan it as a seasonal container subject or bring the container indoors before frost; in-ground plants can instead be used as annual summer coverage. Its late-spring-to-fall display leaves the support visually exposed outside the growing season, so choose a structure that still suits the space when bare.[1]
