Pinus mugo
Mugo Pine is a low, dense evergreen with a broad mounding outline, reaching about 5 feet tall and 8 feet wide. Its horizontal presence is more important than its height: use it where a year-round mass can anchor the front or middle of a bed without blocking views. The compact-looking form suits rock gardens and foundation beds, provided the plan leaves room for its eventual spread.

The mature spread is about 8 ft (2.4 m), so plants set at that distance grow together into a connected screen.
Treat 6 ft as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Give Mugo Pine an open, sunny position beside a foundation, at the outer edge of a rock garden, or as a broad accent within a larger shrub border. Keep it back from narrow walks, steps, and gates so its dense mound does not reduce circulation as it fills out. It works best as a permanent structural planting rather than a temporary gap-filler, with lower plants kept in front only where they will not be crowded by its widening branches.
Plant on 6-foot centers when designing a connected evergreen grouping. Each plant can mature to roughly 8 feet wide, so neighboring mounds may meet and overlap visually over time; this spacing is for a continuous mass, not isolated specimens. For a single plant, reserve an 8-foot-wide clear zone and allow additional room on the path side for pruning, cleanup, and unimpeded passage.
Site Mugo Pine in full sun and provide moderate water while it establishes. A moist, well-drained loam or sandy soil supports the best growth; avoid positions that stay wet or drain poorly after rain. In a mixed bed, place it where irrigation can reach the root zone without creating a persistently saturated pocket around the plant.[1]
The evergreen needles hold the mound in the garden through winter, so leave its full footprint visible in the off-season plan rather than treating the area as vacant. Cones develop in fall, adding small seasonal detail without changing the plant’s broad, dense role in the bed.[1]
Do not confine this pine between a wall and a tight path or into a small planting cutout. Annual late-winter pruning can help retain a compact outline, but the layout should still accommodate the mature mound rather than rely on pruning to solve a space shortage. Choose a position with some shelter from damaging wind.[1]
