Nemesia

Place nemesia along the front of a sunny border, at a bed edge, or in containers close to entrances and sitting areas where its small flowers can be appreciated. It also works as a low filler around taller spring annuals, provided those neighbors do not crowd it from above. In warm-summer locations, reserve a position with afternoon shade to help the spring display hold longer. Keep it within easy reach for regular watering and cleanup.^[1][2]

Set plants 6 inches apart, center to center, for a tightly knit planting. Each plant can spread about 9 inches wide at maturity, so this close spacing is best used for a solid edging, small drift, or full container display rather than for clearly separated individual mounds. Allow a reachable edge beside the planting, especially in narrow beds, so the low foliage and spent blooms can be tended without stepping into the display.

Give nemesia full sun, with afternoon shade where summer heat is strong. Maintain regular moisture, but avoid a place that stays wet after rain or irrigation. A well-drained bed or container keeps the planting more manageable; in pots, use a mix that drains freely and check moisture often, since the close spacing leaves little exposed compost as plants fill in.^[1][2]

Plan nemesia as a spring-to-early-summer layer rather than a permanent summer anchor. Heat can cause the planting to fade or die back, leaving an opening in the bed just when taller warm-season plants begin to expand. Use that turnover deliberately: place it in front of later-growing plants, or leave room to replace a spent drift without disturbing the rest of the design.
