Impatiens hawkeri
New Guinea impatiens brings large, bright flowers to the softer light of partly shaded garden spaces from late spring into fall. At about 1½ feet tall and wide, it forms a compact flowering mound rather than a tall backdrop. Use it where its color can fill the middle or front of a bed without blocking views across the garden.

The mature spread is about 18 inches (45 cm), so plants set at that distance grow together into a closed canopy over the bed.

Place New Guinea impatiens along a shaded walk, at the front of a foundation bed, or in groups beneath the open edge of shrubs and small trees. Its rounded scale works well in container groupings near patios and entries, where regular watering is convenient. Keep the planting close enough to a path or hardscape for easy watering, but leave a clear reach-in edge rather than enclosing it behind taller plants.[1][2]
Set plants 15 inches apart, center to center, for a continuous planting with modest overlap as the mounds fill in. Each plant can reach about 1½ feet wide, so this spacing suits a solid border or mass rather than individually outlined specimens. Along a path, hold the planting line back enough that the mature foliage does not narrow the walking surface or make watering awkward.
Choose partial shade with moist, well-drained soil, especially where the bed receives gentler morning light or filtered light through the day. Regular moisture is central to the layout: group it with nearby plants that can share the same watering routine. Avoid placing it at the dry outer edge of a bed, under roof overhangs, or in pockets where water stands after rain.[1][2]
This annual occupies its space from late spring through fall, so reserve its footprint in beds that would otherwise look empty after spring bulbs fade. Its long flowering window makes it useful for carrying color through the main outdoor season, then clearing the space for a fall or winter changeover.
Protect the planting from intense all-day sun, particularly in hot, humid summer conditions, and provide dependable irrigation. Frost ends the outdoor display, so do not rely on it as a permanent structural element in the planting plan.[2][3]
