Cereus repandus
Peruvian apple cactus is a long-lived, columnar presence for warm, frost-free gardens. Reaching about 20 feet tall and 6 feet wide, it reads more like a vertical architectural feature than a small accent plant. Use it where its upright outline can anchor an open, sunny edge without crowding lower plantings or narrowing circulation.
Set this cactus along a property edge, boundary wall, or the back of a broad bed where height is useful for screening. Keep it outside the active width of paths, gates, patios, and work areas so its mature stems do not intrude on daily movement. Its strong vertical form works best with a clear backdrop or ample sky around it; avoid placing it immediately in front of smaller feature plants that will be visually overwhelmed as it gains height.
Space plants 6 feet apart, center to center, for a continuous row with room for each plant’s mature 6-foot spread. In a screen, run the planting line far enough back from fences and walls to preserve access for inspection and maintenance. Allow a wider clear strip beside paths and seating than the plant’s canopy alone suggests, especially where the bed is entered or crossed.
Reserve the hottest, most open part of the plan for this full-sun cactus. Its very low water needs make it a better fit for dry-use zones than for regularly irrigated borders or beds shared with thirstier perennials. Group it with plants that can occupy the same low-water rhythm, and keep irrigation layouts simple enough that this planting is not routinely soaked.
The plant holds its space year-round, so plan it as a permanent element rather than a seasonal filler. Large white flowers appear in summer and open at night, making a location near an evening patio, terrace, or frequently used window especially worthwhile. Leave sightlines open around the planting so the nighttime display is not hidden behind dense shrubs.
Peruvian apple cactus is suited to USDA hardiness zones 9 through 11. In colder landscapes, treat its need for a frost-free setting as a primary site constraint before assigning it a permanent role in the plan. Its eventual height also means it should be kept clear of low roofs, overhead structures, and views that need to remain open.
