Petunia x hybrida
Petunia brings a long run of trumpet-shaped color to sunny seasonal plantings, from late spring into fall. At about 1 foot tall, it stays low enough for bed fronts and container rims while spreading broadly across open soil. Use it where its flowers can be seen at close range and where routine deadheading is easy to reach.
Space Petunia 12 inches apart, measured center to center (30 cm).
The mature spread is about 2 ft (60 cm), so plants set at that distance grow together into a closed canopy over the bed.
Treat 12 inches as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Set petunias along the front of a border, beside patios, or in baskets where their low, spreading habit can soften the edge without blocking views or circulation. In a bed, reserve a continuous strip rather than inserting single plants among taller neighbors; the plants read most clearly as a connected band of color. Keep baskets and containers close to a door, walk, or seating area so watering and deadheading remain convenient through the season.
Plant on 12-inch centers for a quick, linked planting pattern. Each plant can spread about 2 feet wide, so neighboring plants will overlap as the display fills in; allow that shared footprint within the bed rather than treating each plant as a separate 2-foot circle. At the edge of a path, set the planting line back enough to keep the mature foliage and flowers from narrowing the walking space.
Give petunias full sun and moderate, regular watering, especially where beds dry quickly or containers are exposed to wind. Use a light, well-drained planting medium so moisture does not remain around the roots. A sunny location supports the fullest flowering display; shade reduces bloom performance.[1]
This annual occupies its space from late spring through fall, making it useful for filling a bed after spring bulbs or early cool-season displays fade. Plan for access during the flowering season: regular deadheading helps maintain continuous color, and cutting back leggy growth can restore a tidier outline. Remove and rework the planting when the seasonal display ends.
