Pineapple Sage

Set pineapple sage toward the back or middle of a sunny herb border, leaving its front edge accessible for leaf harvest from late spring through fall. Its upright, open-branched stems and late flower spikes suit pollinator and cutting borders as well as herb beds. Give exposed sites some protection from strong wind, since tall stems can break. It can also be used in a large movable container where winter protection may be needed.^[1][2]

Plant on 3-foot centers, measured from the middle of one plant to the middle of the next. At maturity, each plant can fill about 3 feet of width, so this spacing makes a continuous, full planting while limiting overlap. Keep the planting line at least 18 inches back from a path or bed edge to preserve reach-in access and keep the broad canopy out of circulation space.

Reserve a full-sun position with well-drained soil and moderate, even moisture. Avoid low spots that stay wet after rain. In hot climates, a position with some afternoon shade can be useful, but maintain enough open light for the plant’s tall, flowering growth.^[1][2]

Harvestable foliage occupies the bed from late spring through fall, while the red flowers concentrate interest in late summer and fall. In zones 8 through 11, plan it as a perennial anchor with room for its full footprint. Where winter freezes are expected, treat its space as seasonal or grow it in a container that can be moved under cover before frost.^[1][2]
