Muhlenbergia capillaris
Pink muhly grass is a North American native perennial grass that brings airy, cloud-like pink plumes to the garden from early through late fall. Its roughly 3-foot height and 3-foot spread make it substantial enough to anchor a planting without reading as a solid hedge. Use its fine texture to soften the edge of larger beds or repeat it through an open planting for a loose, meadow-like rhythm.
Place pink muhly grass where low autumn light can pass through the plumes, such as the front half of a broad border, along a sunny drive, or in repeated groups across a naturalistic bed. It is especially effective massed rather than isolated, so allow a series of clumps to read together from a path or seating area. Keep the planting bed wide enough that its arching, airy outline does not spill into routine circulation.[1][2][3]
Space plants 3 feet apart, center to center. At maturity, each clump can occupy about a 3-foot-wide circle, so this interval creates a continuous-looking drift while preserving each plant’s individual form. In a border beside a path, set the centers back from the edge so the mature clumps remain within the bed and leave a clear walking line.
Give this grass full sun for the strongest floral display and use a well-drained site. It suits dry planting areas once established, but new plants need watering while their roots settle in. Avoid placing it in a spot that stays wet, and use the open, sunny portions of a bed rather than the shade cast by walls, shrubs, or tree canopies.[1][2][3]
The main display arrives in fall, when pink flower plumes rise above the foliage and give massed plantings their greatest presence. Leave room for that late-season expansion when planning nearby shorter plants and views across the bed. Cut the old growth back in late winter, before the spring flush, so the clump has a clean start and remains easy to reach for annual maintenance.[1][2][3]
