Roman Chamomile

Set Roman chamomile along the sunny face of a bed, in front of taller herbs or vegetables, rather than behind plants that will shade it. Its low profile suits border edges, rock-garden pockets, and the spaces between larger, upright plantings. Keep the planting outside the main walking line and give it a defined edge beside paths or paving, so its spreading stems can soften the boundary without narrowing circulation. It can also be included near cabbage, cucumber, onion, pea, tomato, and apple plantings.

Plant on 12-inch centers for a continuous groundcover pattern. Although each plant can spread to about 18 inches wide, that closer center-to-center spacing lets neighboring mats meet and cover the soil rather than leaving open gaps. In a border, reserve a band at least 18 inches deep for a single row, or use a wider drift where access is available from one side. Do not crowd it beneath dense, taller plants.

Use a full-sun position with moderate watering, especially while new plants are knitting together. A well-drained planting area helps keep the low crown from sitting in persistent wetness, making raised bed edges, sandy loam pockets, and gently sloped borders useful locations. Where irrigation reaches the area, avoid placing it at the wettest end of the line; give it its own moderate-moisture zone instead.^[1][2]

The flowering and harvest window runs from early summer to early fall, so leave the front of the planting accessible for gathering flowers without stepping across the mat. Its evergreen or long-lasting aromatic foliage can continue to mark the bed edge beyond peak bloom in suitable conditions. Trim only as needed to keep the patch compact and prevent it from flowing into paths or neighboring crowns.^[1][3]
