Osmunda regalis
Royal fern is a stately perennial for damp, partly shaded planting areas. Its large divided fronds rise to about 4 feet, creating a vertical, open-textured feature rather than a low groundcover. Use its 3-foot spread to give a moist woodland edge, shaded border, or water-side bed a strong leafy anchor. The fertile tips add seasonal detail without changing the plant’s broad, clumping role in the layout.

The mature spread is about 3 ft (90 cm), so neighboring plants just meet at maturity without crowding.
Treat 3 ft as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Set royal fern where regular moisture is already part of the site plan: beside a pond, along a stream-like swale, in a rain garden, or toward the back of a shaded border. Its upright fronds make a useful transition between lower plants and shrubs, but avoid squeezing it into a narrow strip beside a path. Reserve a reach-in edge or stepping access nearby so surrounding planting can be maintained without leaning across the fern.[1][2]
Plant on 3-foot centers, allowing each clump roughly its mature 3-foot width. In a repeated drift, this creates a nearly continuous canopy once plants fill in; for more definition between individual crowns, leave a little extra room. Keep the front of the planting at least 18 inches back from a path or bed edge so arching fronds do not occupy the walking line.
Give this fern partial shade and consistently moist soil, especially when placing it under trees or beside structures that intercept rainfall. A moist, acidic setting suits its intended role well. Build the planting around a dependable water source rather than relying on a bed that dries between routine watering, and avoid using it as the dry inner edge of a foundation border.
The fronds are deciduous, turning yellow to brown in autumn before the crown opens the bed during winter. Plan for that seasonal gap with nearby evergreen structure, winter-interest plants, or visible mulch rather than expecting year-round screening. Fertile brown clusters at the frond tips provide late-season texture while the foliage is still present.[1][2]
