Snapdragon

Place snapdragons in the middle or back of an annual bed, behind low edging flowers and in front of shrubs or taller perennial structure. A grouped run reads more clearly than isolated plants, while its upright stems give a cutting garden a productive, orderly edge. Keep the planting close enough to a path or open bed edge that flower stems can be reached without stepping between plants. Taller selections may need staking, so leave room to add discreet supports before the spikes lengthen.^[1][2]

Set plants 12 inches apart, center to center, for a continuous line or block of bloom. Each plant can reach about 1½ feet wide, so neighboring plants may knit together as the bed fills; keep the outside edge clear of narrow paths and avoid relying on the planting as a precise boundary. In a mixed bed, reserve its full width rather than tucking it into small leftover gaps.

Give snapdragon a full-sun position with soil that stays evenly moist but drains freely. Work it into a prepared bed rather than a spot that remains wet after rain, and water at the soil surface when possible instead of repeatedly wetting the foliage. A bed with good air movement and reachable irrigation makes this moderate-water annual simpler to maintain.^[1][2][3]

Plan snapdragon as a cool-season occupant, particularly useful for early spring and fall planting windows. Its display can fade in summer heat, so avoid making it the sole vertical feature in a bed intended to peak through the hottest months. Remove spent flower spikes to encourage further flowering, and keep access lanes or path-side reach available for that recurring task.^[1][2]
