Trachelospermum jasminoides
Star Jasmine is an evergreen twining vine that brings white, intensely fragrant flowers from late spring into early summer. Reaching about 15 feet tall and 5 feet wide, it is best treated as a permanent vertical layer rather than a small filler plant. Use it where its foliage can occupy a fence, arbor, trellis, or other planned support without crowding a bed below.
Place Star Jasmine against a fence, arbor, or trellis that can carry and display its twining stems. It needs wires or trellis to climb; do not expect it to attach itself directly to a masonry wall. Set it beside an entry, seating area, or path only when the support stays outside the circulation zone, leaving the route clear as stems are trained and maintained.[1][2]
Space plants 4 feet apart, center to center, when repeating Star Jasmine along a fence or screen. Each plant can spread about 5 feet wide, so allow its canopy to overlap only where a continuous cover is wanted. Keep the planting line far enough from the support to reach the base for watering and training, and reserve the bed directly below for lower plants that can tolerate the vine’s eventual overhead presence.
Give this vine full sun and regular water, especially while it is establishing across its support. A warm, sheltered position with well-drained soil suits its long-term use on walls, fences, and patio structures. Avoid placing it in a low spot that stays wet or in an exposed run of the garden where wind can pull and tangle the trained stems.[1]
The evergreen framework keeps a fence, arbor, or container support visually occupied beyond the flowering period. Plan the strongest fragrance and white-flower display for late spring and early summer, leaving access to the support for tying in new growth before it spills into paths or neighboring planting areas. Its perennial footprint is most reliable in USDA hardiness zones 8 through 10.
Keep Star Jasmine away from small trees and other supports that would be difficult to reach for pruning, as twining growth can climb into places that are hard to manage. Use an open, purpose-built support instead of letting it wander through woody shrubs. In cooler or frost-prone sites, a protected placement is more practical than an exposed boundary planting.[1][2]
