Summer Savory

Place summer savory near the front or middle of a sunny food garden, where its 18-inch height will not cast over smaller plants. It fits neatly in a dedicated herb strip, along the edge of a raised bed, or in openings among beans, onions, tomatoes, and lettuce. Keep it close to a path or bed edge for repeated cutting, but leave the main walking route clear so foliage can be reached without stepping into neighboring crops.

Set plants 12 inches apart, center to center, to give each plant its expected 12-inch-wide footprint. This close, even spacing works well as a short row or a small block within a vegetable bed. Avoid crowding it beneath broad-leaved crops or placing it where taller plants will close over the planting as the season advances.

Use an open, full-sun position with well-drained soil. Keep the root zone evenly supplied with moisture rather than allowing it to stay wet; damp ground and shade are poor fits for this herb. A sunny edge of a raised bed or a well-drained in-ground herb patch gives it the light and air circulation needed for a tidy, accessible planting.^[1][2][3]

Make it part of the warm-season bed plan, then expect its space to open again after its one-season life cycle.
