Lobularia maritima
Sweet alyssum is a low annual flower that makes a soft, honey-scented layer at the base of a planting. Reaching about 6 inches tall and 1 foot wide, it stays below most border plants while bringing bloom from spring into fall. Its low cover suits sunny edges where pollinator activity is welcome, and moderate water helps keep the planting looking even through the season.

The mature spread is about 12 inches (30 cm), so plants set at that distance grow together into a closed canopy over the bed.
Treat 9 inches as a planning baseline — cultivar and local growing conditions shift the final footprint.
Use sweet alyssum along the front edge of a bed, where its short growth will not hide taller flowers behind it. It can also fill narrow sunny joints between pavers; keep the planting outside the main walking line so spreading stems do not crowd circulation. In mixed borders, repeat it in small drifts beside taller plants rather than relying on a single plant to cover a long edge. It also works as a low filler around the base of containers or at the lip of a raised bed.
Set plants 9 inches apart, center to center, for a connected low planting. Each plant can spread to about 1 foot wide, so the mature mounds will meet and lightly overlap at that spacing. Along a path or patio, place the centers about 6 inches back from the hard edge to leave a clearer line for feet, wheels, and routine sweeping. Reserve open access from one side for trimming and seasonal replacement.
Give sweet alyssum a full-sun position with well-drained soil. Avoid low spots that stay wet after rain or irrigation, especially where a dense edge may hold moisture close to the stems. A slightly raised bed edge, rock-garden margin, or freely draining container planting gives the low mat a more reliable footing than a soggy pocket beside paving.[1][2]
The flowering layer is most continuous in cooler conditions, while bloom can slow during hot summer weather. When the display becomes sparse, clip the plants back to refresh their outline and encourage another flush. Plan it as a seasonal occupant of the bed: keep its low front-of-border space available for replanting or for a cooler-season recovery later in the year.[1][2]
