Placement and use
Give sweetbay magnolia a prominent position at the back or side of a large bed, beside a lawn edge, or near a pond, swale, or other consistently moist area. Keep it far enough from patios, driveways, roofs, and overhead lines that its mature canopy does not press into them. It can also mark the transition between open garden and a wetter, more natural-looking boundary planting. Leave a clear route for mulching and for reaching the trunk during establishment.[1][2]
