Placement and use
Use sweetgum as a long-term canopy tree at the outer portion of a large lawn, along a broad property edge, or in a generous open bed. Keep its future crown clear of buildings, overhead utilities, and smaller sun-dependent planting areas; the mature canopy will cast substantial shade. Avoid placing it beside patios, entries, play surfaces, and main walkways, where fallen gumballs can interfere with circulation and routine use.[1][2]
